The Southern Expressway is one of the key projects for China and Sri Lanka to jointly build the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road under the Belt and Road Initiative. The project spans 96 kilometers, starting from the fourth-largest city in Sri Lanka, Mattala, and ending at the Hambantota Port, serving as a vital transportation artery connecting the western and southern regions of Sri Lanka. CSCEC is responsible for Sections 2 and 3 of the project, with lengths of 26 kilometers and 15 kilometers, respectively. These sections are affectionately known by local residents as a road to prosperity.
