Recently, the CSCEC-built Guojiatuo Yangtze River Bridge in Chongqing was successfully closed on. It is estimated that the project will be opened to traffic in this October. By then, the south-to-north traffic pressure in Chongqing’s downtown area will be eased effectively, the driving time from Liangjiang New Area to the south bank will be shortened from 40 minutes to about 10 minutes and the bridge will function as another important infrastructure project for the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.
As the first bridge designed, built and operated by CSCEC in PPP model, and crossed the Yangtze River, Chongqing Guojiatuo Yangtze River Bridge served as the city’s key municipal project and also a key project of six vertical highways in the downtown area. With a total length of 6.2 kilometers, the bridge was a highway-and-railway-combined suspension one with the biggest span in the country, starting in the north from Guojiatuo, Jiangbei district and ending with Xiakou Town, Nan’andistrict in the south.
With a design of two-tower suspension and a 3-span continuous truss bridge. The upper deck was 41 meters wide with the eight lanes crossing the Yangtze River and a design speed of 80 km/h. The lower deck was 17 meters wide and was designed for the Subway Line 8.
The main structure of the steel truss girder has a length of 862.5 meters, the whole steel truss girder weighed about 25,000 tons in total and the total steel consumption can be used to build almost four Eiffel Towers. The supporting system of the bridge is the triangle truss girder which has a more stable structure compared with preivous ones, and the steel consumption can be saved by more than 20%.
